7 Reasons Why It Is Important To Have Goals
I speak with people all around the world regarding my online business and I’m surprised how many people have never taken the time to sit down and decide what they want their life to look like, what their goals are and how they are going to achieve them. I know I’m banging on a lot about goals recently but it is vital that you have goals and a vision for your life and you take action in alignment with your goals.
With your eyes on your vision, it becomes clear what choice to make when faced with a decision, you are on purpose, you know where you are going and you can start to formulate a plan to get yourself there. Each day you wake up excited and enthusiastic about the possibilities the day will bring and also knowing that you are getting closer to your goals.
That is the power of goals. So, what are your goals?
Here are seven reasons why I recommend you have goals:
1. To give direction to life
2. To make sure you are the one choosing the direction of your life rather than being at the effect of others, the media, social expectations etc.
3. To motivate
4. To make sure you get what you want from life
5. To be productive with your time
6. To reduce stress
7. To give a sense of accomplishment and achievement which builds your confidence
While it can be fun to live without direction in the short term, in the long term human beings require purpose and direction to fulfil your potential. There is the saying that people without a purpose, perish. Goals give a sense of direction and purpose to your life.
It is often easy to let others set your direction for you. You take a job because family or friends point you in that direction and then you follow what your boss dictates. We move in other directions because it seems popular or the media tells us to do so. The simple truth is that if you do not set your own goals then you will find it too easy to follow a path set by others. This can lead to stress and unhappiness. You have a greater chance of happiness and fulfilment following your own path and pursuing our own goals.
While goals certainly give your life direction, they also provide the motivation to get you through difficult times and choices. Perhaps starting a new business that may consume your nights and weekends while working till full time at your job may be difficult in the short term, but in the long run being able to pursue the professional goals you desire will make it worthwhile.
Goals also serve as the destination for what you really want out of life. For some people, goals are measured in money or material goods, while for others goals are measured in time or freedom. If you do not have goals outlined that suit your unique perspective on life it is easy to become sidetracked by life and others.
Goals can also help you be productive with your time. When your “To Do” list becomes too long and your calendar too full, then you can simply compare your goals to the list. What items help you achieve your goal? What items are necessary to your goal? Scratch off the rest as unimportant.
Just as goals make you more efficient with your time, they also reduce stress because using your goals to focus your life and choices makes it easier to make those choices. Should you start that new business you keep thinking about? How does it match up with your goals?
Finally, goals give you a measurable sense of accomplishment. Every goal you achieve, in fact every step you make toward that goal, can give you a boost of energy, motivation and momentum to keep going. Each success powers you toward the next level of success.
Now go out and set your goals and set them big!
