3 Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Achieve Your Dreams
Do you have dreams, but keep procrastinating or postponing them because you feel trapped by the responsibilities of life? Do you want to write a book, work from home or own your own business? Let’s examine how your dream has been deferred and three simple steps to get you back on track.
“How did I get to this point in my life?” is a question many of us ask as we look back and realise if we had our time again, we would do some things differently. One of the reasons people postpone their dreams results from “falling” into a job. Many will accept the first decent paying position. If it’s something you’re not particularly excited about, you’ll justify to yourself that you’ll take this until they figure out what it is you really want to do.
However, the demanding responsibilities of rent or a mortgage, student loans, credit cards, etc can make it hard to focus on what you really want to do. After 3, 5, 7 years in a field, it can become more difficult to move into a different area because it often means a salary cut. At this point, however, a salary cut is often out of the question because of the above-mentioned responsibilities which becomes a vicious cycle.
How do you break the cycle? The guidelines outlined below will put you well on your way to achieving your dreams. Some of this advice will fly in the face of what you have been told all your life. It’s up to you to decide if your dream is important enough for you to commit to it and go for it.
- Make your dreams your top priority.
The mistake many make is putting their dreams on the back burner. For example, “I’ll focus on (you fill in the blank) when the kids start school, when I pay off my student loan, etc.” If you allow your circumstances to dictate your actions, you’ll never get started on your goals and dreams. I’ve never heard of anyone who has procrastinated their way to success. Learn to take action despite your circumstances and allow your circumstances to be your reason why, rather than your excuse not to.
There will always be something that can get in the way, if you allow it. If you really want to be write the book, work from home, own your own business or travel, you have to make it your priority. Otherwise it will always remain just a wish.
2. Manage debt.
Many people are forced into having to make a certain salary because you have become accustomed to a level of lifestyle or you have adjusted your lifestyle to your salary rather than going after what you really want. Most people live from pay check to pay check. Many think nothing of buying a new car or a big screen TV. These items are depreciating assets and you will lose money on them as soon as you walk out of the store or car yard. This is ‘normal’ for most people.
If you were to take that same money and put it towards your dream of starting a business, you will soon hear from the people around you tell you how risky it is to start a business etc and yet they wouldn’t think anything of you spending that money on a new car or big TV.
Look at how you are allocating your resources. Re evaluate how you are using your resources of your time and your money. What can you cut back on? If you start making your dreams your main priority, you will be amazed at what you can do to achieve this by freeing up your time and your resources to go after your dreams.
3. Save and invest: Don’t save for the sake of saving or for a rainy day. Save to invest. Get your money working for you.
The key is to get started on your dreams. You may feel calmer and happier because you are taking action toward your dreams. This will make your current situation more tolerable. Taking positive action in alignment with your goals almost always makes you feel better. Count your wins and feel the achievement and satisfaction of getting started on the path to your goals and this will fuel your motivation to keep going.
Although you may not be able to live your dreams right away, taking these steps will allow you to start realising them today and move you closer to the life you truly desire. As Jim Rohn says: “Work full time on your living and part time on your fortune.”
